Member Case StudyCameron's cancer care journey with Cleo

Cameron's Story

Cameron is a 42-year-old single mom to a 7-year-old son. Cameron was recently diagnosed with HER2 positive breast cancer. She is about to begin active treatment.

Cameron is worried about work, balancing being a mom, being on a fixed family medical leave income, and navigating her disease. She is scared.

Proactive risk identification

Getting connected

Cameron learns about Cleo from her oncology team. She enrolls in Cleo and selects cancer care support for herself.

During enrollment, she takes the Family Health Index assessment and answers questions about her needs. She learns she has needs around self-care, caregiving balance, connectedness, and general health.

Assessment Completed

What's the Family Health Index?

The Family Health Index is Cleo’s proprietary quantitative caregiver health assessment. It measures family health across seven dimensions, allowing Cleo to analyze and be proactive about the specific areas in which members need support.

Engaging with her support plan

Cameron sees in her Cleo app that her Support Plan has been updated with her assessment results. She’s able to see everything Cleo recommends in one place, and keep track of her progress as she works toward her goals.

She then messages her Cleo Guide, Joanna, about parenting support for her son, and schedules a video chat with a cancer care specialist.

Support Plan Updated

WHAT'S A SUPPORT PLAN?

Support Plans are dynamic, personalized task management for Cleo members. Members can view recommended next steps for connection and support both inside and outside of Cleo, in bite-sized, manageable steps.

Meeting Cameron's cancer care specialist

Cameron is a bit overwhelmed and unsure of how Cleo’s cancer care specialist can support her, but is excited for their 1:1 video conversation. Meagan, Cameron’s cancer care specialist, talks with her about how she’s feeling, how to manage her fatigue, and how she’s managing to parent through all of this.

Meagan also provides Cameron with a referral to in-network providers for mental health support, and reminds her that she has a therapy reimbursement benefit offered by her employer should she need it.

Referred to key benefit

What's a benefits referral?

Cleo’s model is focused on coaching through and to care, and as such we actively refer out to in-network benefits and those already within members’ employers suite.

Progress Report

1 month inChecking in with Cameron's Cleo Guide

Cameron has been exploring Cleo’s library of resources related to navigating cancer, self-care, and managing relationships. It’s providing her with more confidence to ask the right questions and prioritize what needs to be done.

Cameron messages Joanna, her Cleo Guide, to report that her treatment will be starting soon, and messages her cancer specialist Meagan to get her questions answered.

She has a hard road ahead of her, but she’s feeling rejuvenated and supported.

Cleo Guide and Specialist support

Securing child care & at-home support

Given that Cameron’s treatment is starting soon, she tells her Cleo Guide Joanna that she’s feeling overwhelmed and needs to ensure that her son has child care, groceries, and at-home support while she’s going through treatment.

Joanna connects Cameron with the Care Activity Team, who sets up grocery delivery and subscription services for household items so that Cameron doesn’t have to go shopping while she’s tired.

They also research and vet backup child care options, and after discussing it with Cameron, book a sitter on her behalf.

What's the Care Activity Team?

Cleo’s Care Activity Team is a concierge service that specializes in both community resources and employer benefits. This team researches, vets, interviews, schedules, helps decide, and secures resources on behalf of our members, such as child care, elder care, health care, financial services, household services, and many others.

The Care Activity Team helps members check things off their to-do list, and therefore alleviate root-cause stressors.

Making a communication plan

Cameron is also concerned about managing work, talking to her family, and getting all of her healthcare and legal paperwork together to ensure she’s set for treatment.

Her Cleo Guide connects her to a Cleo Career Specialist, who helps put together a communication plan about the cancer diagnosis. He also helps Cameron go over the required paperwork, employer process, and benefits for her time away from work.

Care Found

What’s a specialist?

Cleo members have unlimited access to expertise from a wide variety of specialists in areas such as career coaching, cancer care, neurodivergence, chronic conditions, development, nutrition, and many more.

Connecting with her peers

Once Cameron exercises her communication plan to her family, friends, and workplace, she begins treatment. Shortly thereafter, she realizes she has no peers to talk with about the experience.

Cameron messages Joanna, her Cleo Guide, who invites her to a weekly Cleo Connect peer group for individuals with cancer. There, Cameron is able to discuss her treatment experience with others — many of whom are also caregivers.

What's Cleo Connect?

Cleo Connects are a series of community-driven virtual meetings, giving parent and caregiver cohorts the ability to directly connect with each other. Cleo Connects are grouped based on Cleo members going through similar experiences or at similar stages of journeys.
