Member Case StudyKirsten’s single parenting and caregiving journey with Cleo

Kirsten's story

Kirsten is a single mom of a two-year old daughter, Juniper. Kirsten’s mother, Judy, is a widow who lives alone and has been showing signs of dementia. Judy has also fallen three times in the last six months.

Kirsten is experiencing burnout and has been missing work to care for her mother. She needs to find child care for her daughter and is concerned about the additional financial burden.

Cleo’s FHI leads to personalized support

Kirsten enrolls with Cleo and after setting up her account in the app, she takes the Family Health Index. The Family Health Index is Cleo’s proprietary quantitative caregiver health assessment. It measures family health across seven dimensions, allowing Cleo to analyze and be proactive about the specific areas in which members need support.

For Kirsten, her FHI results show that she needs support around Self Care, Caregiving Balance, Connectedness, and General Health. Both the app and live support are customized to Kirsten’s needs through Support Plans and sessions.

Engaging with Cleo

Kirsten signs up for the Health and Wellbeing Coaching series. The six-week series covers:

  • Identifying what matters most to you
  • Creating your health and wellbeing vision

Concierge services

In-home caregiver secured by Cleo’s Care Activity Team

Cleo’s Care Activity Team helps Kirsten secure a local in-home caregiver for her mother, Judy. The team researches caregivers that fit Judy’s requirements and evaluates them for ratings and cost. After sending an initial list to Kirsten for review, the team helps her set up interviews and then advises her on making a final decision. This support helps Kirsten feel empowered knowing it’s the right fit for her mother.

Care secured

Kirsten hires a home health aide, Margaret, for four hours per day during the week. Kirsten, Margaret, and Cleo’s Caregiving Specialist have monthly calls about how Kirsten’s mom, Judy is doing.

Margaret identifies the need for a risk assessment. Cleo schedules the assessment for a time both Kirsten and Margaret are available.

Needs assessed

As Kirsten continues to get support from Cleo, she is prompted in the app to let her Guide know what she needs the most help with.

In one of these assessments, Kirsten flags the need for financial support. Based on this need, her Guide:

  • Researches and recommends local programs, and then schedules a meeting with an estate planning agency in Kirsten’s community
  • Shares additional resources on the cost of aging, budget templates, and long term care insurance information
  • Downloads and fills out state forms for financial aid

Child care

Kirsten messages her Guide. She needs help finding child care for the fall. Her Guide sets up call with Child Care Specialist.

The Child Care Specialist talks to Kirsten’s to understand her preferences.

  • Over the next week, the Care Activity Team calls local centers to gather information
  • Specialist looks up code violations and other reviews
  • A referral document is created with a list of centers

Kirsten reviews the list and chooses three centers to tour.

  • The Care Activity Team schedules tours for Kirsten and her partner
  • Specialist sends an article “Your Child Care Tour Checklist”

Kirsten expresses concerns with affording child care.

  • Child Care Specialist assists Kirsten in signing up for dependent care FSA through her employer

In Kirsten's own words

“I just wanted to update you: the stress and exhaustion that had driven me towards burnout has significantly diminished since Juniper started at daycare. I have been feeling like a normal human being again; amazing what a couple of extra hours a day for work or self care or sleep has done for me. I am starting to feel like myself again at work and at home. Having said all that, I want to acknowledge all the support you gave me during that really rough stretch, from checking in on me proactively every so often to connecting me with mental/emotional health specialists. I don’t think I get through that without you. Thank you so so much.”
